The title gets it right here -- as the album's as much a soul effort as a blues one -- and is a nice change from the sound of Lowell's earlier years! There's still plenty of grit in the grooves here -- and even with the front cover proclamation, the album's still one that's best filed in the blues racks -- but the album does show a great mixing of modes that was common for some of the west coast releases on the Kent label at the time -- the kind of south LA blend of sounds from the east mingled with the 60s changes going on in its own community.

Lowell's vocals have a hard-bitten edge that's totally great, and instrumentation includes some heavy piano and guitar, plus some of the heavier rhythms that point towards his famous Tramp sound to come. The album has a pretty nice soulful feel -- a bit rootsy, but also with some urban electric touches that go nicely with Lowell's vocals -- and titles include "Shattered Dreams", "Talkin Woman", "Black Nights", "Sittin Here Thinkin", "Every Time It Rains", and "My Aching Back". CD features 2 bonus tracks -- "Strange Feeling" and "Trouble I'm In".

Lowell Fulson was one of the early artists to blend the tough melodic sensibilities of the blues with the more accessible (but no less emotional) framework of 1960s soul, and his 1966 set, Soul, finds him walking both sides of the fence on these 12 songs. Of course, some of these songs were a lot more soul- (or blues) flavored than others, and ironically Fulson would dig deeper into a soul groove on his next album, Tramp; perhaps using this title was a bit premature for him.

For the most part, Soul sounds like straight-ahead blues session, through the bold horn charts on "Talking Woman" and "Change Your Ways" (among others) at once strengthen the arrangements and give it a more modern, uptown feel, while Fulson's vocals, rich without sounding heavy, certainly fit the boundaries of the soul idiom like a glove, and his guitar work is in fine fettle. Like a fine brandy, Lowell Fulson's best stuff manages to be potent and smooth at the same time, and that's just what he delivers on Soul.

Por décadas a DC tem sido uma das duas maiores companhias de quadrinhos norte-americanos, ao lado da Marvel Comics (sua rival histórica). Porém, a esta altura, Wheeler-Nicholson já encerrara sua participação na empresa. Em 1937 de modo a honrar compromissos, Wheeler-Nicholson aceitou Harr Donenfeld como sócio, formando a Detective Comics, Inc., juntos com Jack S. Liebowitz. Como suas dívidas continuavam, Wheeler-Nicholson foi obrigado a sair da empresa.
Pouco tempo foi a National Allied Publications publicou aquele que pode ser considerado seu quarto título Action Comics, que trouxe a estréia do Superman, um personagem que Wheeler-Nicholson não esteve diretamente envolvido, e o editor Vin Sullian escolheu para iniciar a série.
National Allied Publication e Detective Comics, Inc., claramente duas companhias com os mesmos donos (ainda que com cotas acionárias distintas) se fundiram em National Comics, em 1944.
Apesar do nome oficial ser National Comics e National Periodical Publications, o logo "Superman-DC" foi usado na linha, e a empresa era coloquialmente conhecida como DC Comics, por anos antes da adoção oficial do nome..."

Riddles Of Time & A Riddle Of Timing - SendMeRSS

Time travel has been on my mind for the past few days, as it sometimes is. Of all the concepts that writers of science fiction – or speculative fiction, as it might better be called – sometimes tangle with, time travel is the one that grabs hold of my imagination the hardest. I admit I have some interest in anticipating what it will be like when we are confronted with the proof that there are other civilizations, other sentient beings, somewhere else in the universe. The meeting of disparate cultures, if and when it happens (and I'm betting it will), will radically alter our ideas about the universe and our place in it.

But that's something that I believe will someday leave the arena of science fiction and become science fact. Time travel is a less likely proposition. (I'm not going to say it won't ever become reality; when I'm tempted to do so, I recall the correction the New York Times ran in 1969, when Apollo 11 made the first lunar landing. The Times acknowledged that had it been wrong in its insistence during the 1920s that rockets could never boost payloads into space.) And I enjoy very much wading through the thickets of fiction about time travel, some of it very good, some of it less so.

I think about it today because I completed last night a re-reading of The Time Patrol, a 1991 collection of short stories and novellas by Poul Anderson (whom I mentioned in a post earlier this week). Anderson's structure for the collection is that there is a group of men and women who jaunt through time and space, safeguarding human history at the behest of the Danellians, a powerful culture descended from humankind millions of years in the future. When variations in history are detected – sometimes the result of accidents and sometimes the product of mischief perpetrated by criminals who have illegally gained access to time travel – the patrol goes into action to safeguard history as we know it and to ensure the time line that results in Danellian civilization.

Anderson's work is sturdy, and his tales range from simple detective stories to longer examinations of historical cultures that are generally unwritten about (at least from where I read), like the Mediterranean culture of Tyre in 950 BCE, or the Ostrogoths in what is now Poland and Ukraine in about 300 CE. (Anderson's long story set in the latter locale, "The Sorrow of Odin the Goth," is the best in the book and one of the best stories I've ever read, speculative fiction or otherwise.) Anderson also wrote a novel, The Shield of Time. I've read it once, and started re-reading it last evening; its tale didn't stick in my head from the first reading, so we'll see how the second run-through goes.

Other authors have invested much of their writing efforts in time travel. A few come to mind quickly.

Robert A. Heinlein wrote a little bit of every kind of speculative fiction, but to me, his time travel novels and stories were his best, starting in 1973 with Time Enough For Love, subtitled "The Lives of Lazarus Long." Time travel enters the tale in the last third or so of the volume, and for the rest of the book and for much of the remainder of Heinlein's work, exploration of time travel, and the inherent contradictions and paradoxes, was a constant.

In addition, Jack Finney has written a three-novel series featuring a character named Simon Morley beginning with 1970's Time and Again. Allen Appel wrote a series about the travails of Alex Balfour, whose time travels are involuntary; that series begins with 1985's Time After Time. And Darryl Brock is the author of two time-travel novels: If I Never Get Back and Two in the Field, which feature time traveler Sam Fowler. (Brock's first, from 1990, is likely my favorite time travel book of all; Fowler spends a good portion of the book traveling the U.S. with the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first professional baseball team.)

Anytime I read those books or others like it, of course, the notion runs in my head: If I could travel through time, where would I go? Well, six places/times come to mind:

1. The American Great Plains in, say, 1500. I'd love to see the buffalo in herds that stretch to the horizon.

2. The Globe Theater in Shakespeare's London, for one of his comedies. Given changes in pronunciation, I likely wouldn't comprehend the English, but I'd know when to laugh.

3. I'd like to go to two baseball games in Pittsburgh, one in Exposition Park in 1908 to see Honus Wagner, the greatest shortstop of all time during what was likely his greatest season, and the other in Forbes Field in 1939, when Josh Gibson – probably the greatest catcher of all time – and Buck Leonard, one of the great power hitters of all time, were teammates on the Homestead Grays of the Negro National League.

4. It would be fun to be in Liverpool, England, in 1961 and stop in at the Cavern Club for a performance by the very young Beatles. They played 292 times in the club in 1961 and 1962.

5. I'd travel in 1362 to the land near Kensington, Minnesota, that would eventually be farmed by Olof Öhman, to see if a traveling group of Swedes and Norwegians actually left there the stone inscribed with runes that Öhman found in 1898. Famous in Minnesota and among archeologists on a wider scale, the Kensington Runestone is one of the great historical riddles.

Another riddle that I ponder now and then – as does anyone who loves music – is why some performers make it big and others don't. About a month ago, I ran across a short post from a year ago at the Illfolks blog about an early 1970s singer-songwriter named Patti Dahlstrom. The two tracks posted there – "Ollabelle and Slim" and "Rider" – intrigued me a lot. So I began to dig.

And I learned that there isn't a lot of information out there about Patti Dahlstrom. According to Illfolks, she's evidently in Houston, but according to a piece I saw for the online magazine Spectropop, she's living in St. John's Woods in London, England. So there's very little to go on. Google provides a few links, but nothing with much hard data, not even a birth year (although I'd guess somewhere between 1948 and 1951). What remains are Patti's four albums, all of which were fairly easy to acquire:

As I was recording Patti Dahlstrom this morning to rip the mp3s, the Texas Gal said to me, "It sounds like Carole King."

Well, maybe. The sound of the accompaniment is akin to Tapestry, with lots of piano and acoustic sounds. Any electric instrumentation is folded into the background, and the sound of the album is homey. If I were to draw a comparison, I'd slide it in with the three albums made about the same time by Joy of Cooking.

But the voice, Patti's voice, doesn't slide that easily into either one of those folders. She has a twang and a drawl at times, giving her a bluesy, country feel. The blogger at Illfolks commented on "her rootsy Southern vocals," calling them "true if not pretty." The blogger went on to say, "Perhaps at the time (early 70's) there was no such thing as 'country crossover,' so being pitched as a pop star was doing her a disservice."

That seems about right. Patti's voice wouldn't have fallen neatly into a genre in an industry that seems, more often than not, to be looking for a repetition of the last big thing instead of looking for something unique. So Patti was likely too countryish for pop and far too connected to pop-rock for her records to be placed in the country bins. She recorded her four records and went on.

Today's share is her first, Patti Dahlstrom, from 1971. I think it's generally a good album, with Patti writing the lyrics to all ten songs and music for six of them. (Music for "Get Along, Handsome" and "I'm Letting Go" came from Severin Browne, while Robbie Leff wrote the music for "Weddin'" and "Comfortable.") To me, the standout is the album's opener, "Wait Like A Lady," with "And I Never Did" and "Ollabelle and Slim" not that far behind.

That makes it sound like the other tracks on the record lack something. They don't, but there is a sameness throughout the record that veers close to an overload of mellowness. A few things keep that from happening: One is the country feel of "Weddin'," while another is the slow acceleration of the tempo on "Ollabelle and Slim" that pulls the record forward. The third is the sweet saxophone of Jim Horn weaving its way around the vocal on "Comfortable."

As I noted, this is the first of four Patti Dahlstrom albums. I'll be sharing the other three in weeks to come. I like this one a lot.

Today is the ideal day for some musical experiences at Loronix. If I have the nerve needed, everybody will be surprised with the last post I want to make today. Anyway, I would like to say this post is not part of any experiment. Cauby Peixoto is an important artist with a recording career that spans decades, with more than 400 albums released. If we are here to write the story of Brazilian music, this story will be incomplete without mentioning Cauby Peixoto. Let's see.

This is Cauby Peixoto - Os Grandes Sucessos de Cauby Peixoto (1969), for RCA Candem, featuring a repertoire of early Cauby Peixoto recordings taken from the late 50's to the early 60's 78 RPMs, a good starting point if you want to get along with the beginning of Cauby Peixoto career. RICHARD 'GROOVE' HOLMES: Book of the Blues Vol. 1 @ 320kbps - SendMeRSS

Richard "Groove" Holmes never attained the same kind of super star status as Hammond legend Jimmy Smith - despite being equally skilled in the keyboard pyrotechnics department. This collection features a grittier, good time approach than Smith's albums for Blue Note and later Verve Records. In the 1970s' Holmes pioneered funk and fusion sounds - often using wah wah pedals and other effects to augment the basic Hammond sound, but here the approach is straight ahead but no less moving.
Recorded around the same time as Jimmy Smiths' first big band recordings, Book of the Blues does very much what it says on tin, as Holmes wanders through the standard mid 60's blues songbook in quartet and big band settings. No matter what the setting, Holmes' soulful organ solos, backed by his own rocksteady pedal bass work, pulse with swing and in-the-pocket timing, surging from understated trills in the upper register to full on intense church style preaching that falls just the right side of overpowering.
The earthy balled "How Long, How Long Blues" showcases this gospel approach magnificently, Holmes' double-handed chord voicings producing some old school but utterly stunning crescendos of sound, juxtaposed by mellow passages as the rhythm section keep the tempo, allowing Holmes to gently groove right around the beat. In stark contrast "Roll Em Pete" is a foot stomping swing number where Holmes gets a chance to display his incredible coordination, asscattershot soloing rides overasteadfast organ bass line- a feat akin to playing two instruments at the same. The unnamed guitarist supplies some fine and fluid soloing as this number roars ahead - it's impossible to remain static under the onslaught until the typically grandiose finale puts a seal on the proceedings.
Groove Holmes remains the jazz organists' organist - and this even this straightahead set hints at the way that organ jazz was to develop over the coming decade; good time, soulful sounds but always with enough 'art' to keep your ears hapilst your foot taps along! --- by Greg Boraman, BBC

R.L. BURNSIDE: Come On In @ 320kbps - SendMeRSS

You have to give a guy credit for trying. In an age when most of the old blues players are either dead or too old to play, R.L. Burnside, the 71-year-old Mississippi native, can still rip dirty juke-joint blues in convincing fashion. Come On In attempts, with some success, to bring one of America's oldest musical forms into the 21st century by adding sampling and looping techniques to Delta blues. Come On In is a collaboration with Beck mixmaster Tom Rothrock and Alec Empire of Digital Hardcore. Seldom does one see the words "dub," "remix" and "programming" on a Delta blues album, but R.L. Burnside is no ordinary bluesman. Come On In is a risky move to say the least, and unfortunately, it doesn't always pay off. The best tracks in the album are the least techno-fied. "Come On In," a solo shot, and the down-and-dirty "Just Like a Woman" has a non-trip-hopped Burnside mining tough riffs for all their emotion. "Let My Baby Ride" with a stomping, looped beat, is still recognizable as Burnside and works well. On the other hand, "Don't Stop Honey" and "It's Bad You Know" take the techno tampering too far, and the results are feckless shells of what were once gritty blues. Next time out, if Burnside gets his ass pocket o' whiskey, turns down the techno a bit and cranks those amps up, he could be onto something. --- by Matthew Hilburn, All Music

MISSISSIPPI FRED McDOWELL & JOHNNY WOODS: Mama Says I'm Crazy @ 320kbps - SendMeRSS

One of the most talented musicians of his time. Fred McDowell performed to large crowds all over the United States and Europe for several decades. He also spent most of his life working at a service station in Como, Mississippi, where I first approached him. This was in 1967. Fred couldn't have been more excited about doing a rcording session and insisted we hire Johnny Woods, his old friend and a local legend to accompany him on harp.
No one in the area had seen Johnny in about eight years, but Fred had heard he was back in town. Three hours on a dirt road later, we pulled up to a dialpidated shack in a town called Senatobia and found Johnny Woods - whom I later found to be a cordial, gentle man, forty-something, one hell of a harp player - passed out on the front porch. Crammed inside the two-room house were fifteen or twenty men boisterously enjoying their Sunday afternoon, drinking and shooting craps. ''Hey. Shake 'Em, what you doing?'' they greeted Fred, who is best known in the area for his performance of ''Shake 'Em on Down''. When Fred stat down with his guitar and a bottleneck, everyone joined in. A couple of songs later, Woods dragged himself in, still in a haze so thick you could see it in his eyes. He started rummaging through his pockets for his harmonica, and when Fred launched into ''Shake 'Em on Down'', Johnny's shrill harmonica joined the whang of the guitar to make a sound powerful enough to bring the walls down. We arranged for Woods to meet us at Fred's house the following evening.

Parabéns a Todos! - SendMeRSS

O samba deu o tom na final da quinta edição Festival Botucanto, realizado de 12 a 16 de março, em Botucatu. Vencedor do prêmio de 5 mil reais, o samba "Danada" de Marcos Lima e Elisa Lucinda ficou em primeiro lugar, seguida de outros dois sambas: "1,2 e ...", de Dimi Zunquê e "Samba de uma noite só", de Fernando Cavallieri. O quarto lugar ficou com "São João" de Zeca Loureiro e o quinto com "Valsa de Antiga" de Mário Martinez.

A Melhor Canção da Cuesta, foi "Rio", escrita por Cláudio Fanelli e interpretada por Alê Moreira. "Minha Intenção", de Jerry Espíndola, ganhou o melhor arranjo; Ruthe Gloria foi a melhor intérprete por "Estrada", de sua autoria; a melhor letra foi "Morcego", de Alê Carmani e o melhor instrumentista Dimi Zunquê.

Além das canções, o Festival ofereceu o Prêmio Botucanto, dedicado a projetos musicais completos, selecionados pela comissão organizadora do evento. Além da premiação em dinheiro, os projetos fizeram shows de média duração durante o evento. A cantora paulistana Ilana Volkov foi a vencedora na categoria vocal; o instrumental ficou com os violonistas Euclides Marques e Luizinho 7 Cordas; o Prêmio Prata da Casa com Aléssio di Pascucci; o grupo Tarancón venceu a categoria Mercosul; pop rock ficou com a banda mineira Zé Guela; MPB com a cantora Anna Tréa e o Prêmio Botucanto Especial com Eduardo Santhana, pelo projeto "Voz & Pianos".

As etapas do Festival Botucanto foram encerradas com shows dos músicos Chico Saraiva, Reynaldo Bessa, Pena Branca, Lô Borges e Chico César. O Festival também teve uma feira de artes e oficinas com Chico Saraiva (violão e composição), Ricardo Zohyo (baixo), Priscila Brigante (percussão), Swami Jr. (produção musical); Reynaldo Bessa (poemas musicados). Aconteceu ainda a exibição do documentário "Cantoria Caipira", de Aléxis Góes e Cláudio Coração.

Especial Iron Maiden - Singles (Parte 37) - SendMeRSS

A faixa escolhida para encabeçar o segundo single do disco Dance of Death foi a ótima Rainmaker que foi lançado em 24 de novembro de 2003. Assim como Wildest Dreams tivemos CD e DVD single, algumas b-sides muito semelhantes as originais e um poster duplo. O CD é composto pela 'orchestral version' de Dance of Death (esta é a versão orquestrada mais diferente de todas até aqui e bem interessante também) e uma jam session com resultado menos cansativo do que Pass the Jam do single anterior em More Tea Vicar. O legal é ver Bruce Dickinson fazendo um rap! O DVD é composto pelo clipe da música título, duas faixas ao vivo do já citado show beneficente ao Clive Burr em Londres e um slide show. Infelizmente também não possuo este DVD Single, portanto quem o tiver fique a vontade para passar-me o link, ok?

Eu só sabia que estava nu, e ao lado ficava o camarim cheio de roupas coloridas, roupas de astronauta, pirata, guerrilheiro. E eu, do mais pobre da minha nudez, queria vestir todas. Todas, para não trair minha nudez. Mas eles gostam de uniformes, admitiriam até a minha nudez, contanto que depois pudessem me esfolar e estender a minha pele no meio da praça como se fosse uma bandeira, um guarda-chuva contra o amor, contra os Beatles, contra os Mutantes. Estagiárias eróticas e lobistas gostosas sempre aparecem para atrapalhar. Na política americana sempre há o perigo do sexo. A tradição puritana transita do sacrifício, da castidade até as mais horrendas perversões. Os republicanos toleram a corrupção, as maracutaias de Dick Cheney e Bush no Iraque, mas quando surge uma amante de republicano a casa cai. Alias, que gata a lobista.

A imagem de MCcain ostentando pureza absoluta, com a esposa plastificada e de sorriso gelado é o espelho invertido de Hillary e Bill Clinton lado a lado. MCcain é o herói da resistência, cinco anos na prisão, sem mulher, apoiado pela esposa que o esperou.

Hillary é a corninha que perdoou ao lado do adúltero arrependido. É interessante ver a imagem de retidão que os brancos querem passar, comparada com a figura mais relax de Obama. Ele traz o clima tolerante, sexy do negro no imaginário americano. Se aparecesse uma amante do Obama, talvez rappers e guetos comemorassem. Sex appeal era o grande charme de Clinton. Uma sacanagem assumida no sorriso mordido, que ele agora tem de negar.

Na batalha entre caretas e descolados, creio que a América tende para Obama. Os republicanos e o casal Clinton reformado parecem cantar hinos de pureza. Obama é jazz.

Porta-retratos combinados com tocador de MP3 são o novo lançamento da Genius para o mercado brasileiro.

O dispositivo tem capacidade para armazenar até 700 fotos.

O DPF A02 reúne cinco recursos: porta-retratos com até 700 fotos (JPEG ou BMP), reproduz vídeos em AVI, toca músicas em MP3, tem calendário e relógio digital.

A tela é feita de LCD e tem 10,4 polegadas.

O contraste é 4:3 e é possível exibir até quatro imagens simultaneamente.

O preço sugerido é de R$ 888,00.

Já o DPF 802 tem tela LCD de oito polegadas, resolução de 800 x 600 pixels e alto-falantes embutidos. Ele também possui relógio digital, calendário e alarme. O preço é de R$ 858,00.

Os dois aparelhos tem 128 MB na memória, vêm com controle remoto, são compatíveis com cartões de memória CF, SD, MMC, MS, e MD.

A transmissão de dados pode ser feita pela interface USB 2.0.
