Norman Smith também trabalhou como produtor em três discos do Pink Floyd. Conhecido pela alcunha de Hurricane Smith, ele estava com 85 anos de idade.

O inglês Norman Smith, que trabalhou como engenheiro de som de todos os discos dos Beatles de 1962 a 1965, e produziu três álbuns do Pink Floyd, morreu na última segunda-feira (3) aos 85 anos.

Conhecido pela alcunha de Hurricane Smith, ele começou a trabalhar na EMI em 1959 e, na ausência de George Martin, comandou as primeiras sessões de gravação dos Fab Four no estúdio Abbey Road, em Londres, em junho de 1962. Naquela época, John Lennon apelidou-o de "Norman Normal".

Promovido a produtor em 1966, Smith trabalhou com o Pink Floyd nos álbuns "The piper at the gates of dawn" (1967) e "A saucerful of secrets" (1968), além de um dos discos do álbum duplo "Ummagumma" (1969), apesar de ter dito que não conseguia entender a psicodelia e que era difícil trabalhar com Syd Barrett.

Ele ainda chegou ao topo das paradas como autor dos singles "Don't let it die" (1971) e "Oh babe what would you say" (1971).

The Human Be-In and The Hippy Revolution

In January 1967, a counter-culture event brought the focus of world media to a small, run-down, area of San Francisco called Haight Ashbury.

Following on the heels of the Beat Generation of the 1950's, a new social group was starting to flower. Early on they were called hipsters and beatniks until they became known as 'hippies'.

The intersection of two streets called 'Haight' and 'Ashbury' was at the center of a run-down Victorian quarter of San Francisco. The Haight, as it's called, was a low-rent area first populated by students. It was soon nicknamed 'Hashbury' since just about every hippy was 'a head', as pot smokers were called. By 1965 it was fast becoming the hippy center. Artists, musicians, writers, poets, painters and fun-loving hippies were drawn there from all over America. Lifestyles and morality were changing. Communes and communal living were contradicting the taboos of an earlier generation, which believed in sex after marriage.

The small, run down, district of San Francisco had transformed into a counter-culture haven. One of its spokesmen was Allen Cohen. He set up a hippy, psychedelic student magazine called the San Francisco Oracle. It was filled with new art and writings by the poets and thinkers of the day. Allen Cohen and fellow artist Michael Bowen organized an event that would lead to the famous Human Be-In a few months later. It was called the Love Pageant Rally and 3,000 people attended.

It was organized in response to a new law in California banning the use of the psychedelic drug, LSD. The new law would come into effect on October 6th 1966, and Allen Cohen interpreted this date, Michael Bowen and others as the symbol '666' representing the Beast as found in Revelation in the Bible. They also saw the growing confrontations between hippy communes and the police. Busts were being made for marijuana. This led too street protests and rioting. It was becoming clear that a new form of protest was needed.

LSD was introduced to America in 1949. In less than a decade it had reached a high standing among psychiatrists as a therapeutic tool in treating severely resistant psychiatric conditions. It was also found to ease the physical and psychological distress of terminal cancer patients. By the sixties the American Food and Drug Administration classified it as an experimental drug and therefore a controlled substance. The primary problem was communication - between San Francisco officials and the swelling numbers of Ashbury hippies.

A Celebration of Innocence

"Instead of protesting the moratorium of LSD," said Cohen, "instead of protesting the law that was going into effect, our idea was to make a demonstration which would show the law's falsity. Without confrontation, we wanted to create a celebration of innocence. We were not guilty of using illegal substances. We were celebrating transcendental consciousness. The beauty of the universe. The beauty of being."

3,000 people gathered in Panhandle Park for the Love Pageant Rally. Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead played from the back of a flatbed truck.

Ex-Harvard professor Richard Alpert, who later became spiritual guide Baba Ram Das, met up with Allen Cohen and Michael Bowen at the rally. Cohen asked Alpert what he thought of the day.

"Well," said Alpert, "it's a hell of a gathering. It's just being. Humans being. Being together."

"Yeah," said Bowen, "It's a Human Be-In."

Then it was decided to organize something called the Human Be-In. The idea was to bring tens of thousands of people together, which is why it was also called 'A Gathering of the Tribes'.

The huge open-air hippy gathering took place in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, January 14th 1967. More than 20,000 people turned up.


The Vietnam War

Stephen Drewes remembers how young people of his own age were consumed with getting out of being drafted to fight in Vietnam. "Evading the draft was an extremely serious and consuming topic with men of my age in the United States. Lots of people went to Canada; actually left the country to avoid it. If you could afford it you did something like bringing in a certificate from a psychiatrist saying that you are mentally unstable and couldn't deal with it. The result of that of course is that it was a war fought by poor people."

Meeting of minds

Allen Cohen characterized the event as a meeting-of-the-minds. It brought together philosophically opposed factions. On the one side was the late 1966 San Francisco-based counter culture - the Berkeley radicals - who were tending toward increased militancy in response to the American government's Vietnam war policies. On the other side were the Haight-Ashbury hippies, who, with the help of psychoactive compounds and various spiritual guides, saw the cosmic humor in it all, and urged peaceful protest and ongoing joyful celebration.

The Be-In focused the key issues of the 1960s counter-culture: personal power, decentralization, ecological awareness, and consciousness expansion.

It was seen as more than just a war protest movement. The counter culture questioned the authorities of the day in regard to, civil rights, women's rights, and consumer rights. It shaped its own alternative media: "Underground" newspapers and radio stations. It also revealed new directions in music, art, and technology.


The Human Be-In press release

'A union of love and activism previously separated by categorical dogma and label mongering will finally occur ecstatically when Berkley political activists and hip community and San Francisco's spiritual generation and contingents from the emerging revolutionary generation all over California meet for a Gathering of the Tribes for a Human Be-In at the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park.

Twenty to fifty thousand people are expected to gather for a joyful Pow Wow and Peace Dance to be celebrated with leaders, guides and heroes of our generation: Timothy Leary will make the first Bay area public appearance; Alan Ginsberg will chant and read with Gary Snyder, Michael McClure, and Lenore Kandel; Dick Alpert, Jerry Rubin, Dick Gregory, and Jack Weinberg will speak.

Music will be played by all the Bay area rock bands, including the Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and many others. Everyone is invited to bring costumes, blankets, bells, flags, symbols, cymbals, drums, beads, feathers, flowers.

Now is the evolving generation of American young the humanization of the American man and woman can begin in joy and embrace without fear, dogma, suspicion or dialectical righteousness. A new concert of human relations being developed within the youthful underground must emerge, become conscious, and be shared so that a revolution of form can be filled with a Renaissance of compassion, awareness, and love in the revelation of the unity of all mankind. The Human Be-In is the joyful, face-to-face beginning of the new epoch.'

The huge open-air hippy gathering took place in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, January 14th 1967. More than 20,000 people turned up.

The Vietnam War

Stephen Drewes remembers how young people of his own age were consumed with getting out of being drafted to fight in Vietnam. "Evading the draft was an extremely serious and consuming topic with men of

my age in the United States. Lots of people went to Canada; actually left the country to avoid it. If you could afford it you did something like bringing in a certificate from a psychiatrist saying that you are mentally

unstable and couldn't deal with it. The result of that of course is that it was a war fought by poor people."

Meeting of minds

Allen Cohen characterized the event as a meeting-of-the-minds. It brought together philosophically opposed factions. On the one side was the late 1966 San Francisco-based counter culture - the Berkeley radicals

- who were tending toward increased militancy in response to the American government's Vietnam war policies. On the other side were the Haight-Ashbury hippies, who, with the help of psychoactive compounds

and various spiritual guides, saw the cosmic humor in it all, and urged peaceful protest and ongoing joyful celebration.

The Be-In focused the key issues of the 1960s counter-culture: personal power, decentralization, ecological awareness, and consciousness expansion.

It was seen as more than just a war protest movement. The counter culture questioned the authorities of the day in regard to, civil rights, women's rights, and consumer rights. It shaped its own alternative media:

"Underground" newspapers and radio stations. It also revealed new directions in music, art, and technology.

A New Look at the Summer of Love

Yes, it is 35 years ago since San Francisco's biggest concern was how many of America's youth, now known as baby boomers, would descend upon the Haight Ashbury in search of the holy grail of sex, drugs and rock and roll. In the spring of '67 one of the members of the Board of Supervisors considering whether to allow the expected hoards to sleep in Golden Gate Park said, "Would you let thousands of whores waiting on the other side of the Bay Bridge into San Francisco."

Of course, in the Haight Ashbury we referred to this Holy Grail as free love, expanded consciousness and the ecstatic experience. We looked upon that summer as the beginning of a children's crusade that would save America and the world from the ravages of war, and the inner anger that brings it forth, and materialism. We had already identified our lives with the world as a political and social entity, and the planet as a unified environment, an earth household. Love, we believed, would replace fear and small communal groups would replace the patriarchal family and mass alienation.
There was two aspects to the experience of the 60s: the resistance to the war, and the psychedelic experience, personified as political activists and hippies. For the most part these two vectors overlapped in the same individuals, so that many of those who actively resisted the Vietnam war had used LSD and smoked marijuana. As a society we have tried to understand the sixties mostly as political resistance to the war, but have mostly ignored and denied the changes in values and culture brought about by psychedelic experiences.
It is difficult to estimate how many people used LSD between 1965 and 1975 when the war finally ended. One chemist, who wasn't as productive as some, told me he produced and sold seven million doses. My off the cuff estimate would be that from 10 to 30 million people took LSD on the average of six times.

"Tripping" was common in every area of society from the wealthy and politically powerful to the arts, sciences and media. LSD was trendy, exotic, ecstatic, messianic and dangerous. It promised psychological healing and spiritual transcendence and often delivered. It should be acknowledged that it could also cause pain ("bad trips") and psychotic breaks, and even suicides, and in the case of the Manson Family, it was an accomplice to murder. There was an aura of living dangerously on a psychological frontier that was part of its mystique. But given the amount of its use, I would say it was the one of our least destructive national obsessions.

Why did so many people take this dangerous voyage? What have been its effects? To understand this we have to reconsider the Haight Ashbury, the Hippies and the Summer of Love. The predominant feeling among the Hippies from about 1965 through the summer of '67 was that they were agents and witnesses of a dawning of a new age. An age in which the warrior spirit, that had vaulted western man to the domination and potential destruction of creation, would be dissolved in the spiritual transcendence of the saint. Gandhi and Martin Luther King were our heroes and we had turned to the rich heritage of Asian mysticism and metaphysics for our inspiration and our practice. We leaped across oceans and through time to pre-Christian mythologies like the American Indian, the Egyptian and the occult and pagan philosophies of Europe. We studied with Buddhists and Indian gurus, native shamans, witches and yogis. We turned from Aristotelian and Christian dualism to the four pronged logic of Vedanta philosophy. We studied the Upanishads, the Tao Te Ching, Alan Watt's books on Zen Buddhism, Black Elk's visions and Hermann Hesse's novels, especially Siddhartha. We wouldn't leave the house without consulting the I Ching, or our Tarot cards or our astrological charts.

Were we being naive or superstitious? No, I think this was the most important and long lasting aspect of the 60s despite the backlash of the 80s.and 90s. It was the beginning of a renaissance in thought and culture similar to the Renaissance that brought Greek and Roman images and ideas back to Europe in the middle ages. Ideas that eventually led to the end of the domination of the Catholic Church, the rise of the nation state, the rebirth of democracy and the development of science.

We were becoming world citizens. Peace and love weren't just slogans but states of mind and experiences that we were living and bearing witness to. Living in harmony with the earth was an ideal that we felt and perceived as real experience. We were bringing forth a second Renaissance that would change human culture.
In the face of the Cold War and nuclear weapons these changes in philosophical and spiritual orientation would slowly displace the Warrior Spirit and bring us to a new stage of evolution. The transformation of the inner warrior has had its outer effect in the end of the Cold War. Gorbachev said to an American reporter, "I'm going to do a terrible thing to you. I'm going to take your enemy from you."
The Summer of Love was the peak of the Haight Ashbury experience. Over 100,000 youth came to the Haight. Hoards of reporters, movie makers, FBI agents, undercover police, drug addicts, provocateurs, Mafioso and about 100,000 more tourists to watch them all followed in their wake. It was chaotic and wonderful and "heavy" as we used to say, and the experience was shared and spread throughout the world. The police and Tact Squad raided the street every weekend gradually driving most of the originators to all parts of the world to plant the seeds of change.
The process of cultural liberation began in the seventies with the conscious drive for Women's' Liberation and Gay Liberation and the Black Liberation movement, so brutally feared and attacked by the CIA and FBI. Yes, political reaction set in, but that didn't stop the new ideas from spreading. We have seen the rise of psychological insight, alternative medicine, and spiritual values and practices in the New Age Movement. The tremendous interest in ecology and whole planet thinking began then, and the continuing call to the young to rebellion and awakening, through the liberating effect of rock and roll music in all its permutations emanated from the Sixties.

The beginnings of the computer revolution also has its roots firmly in the sixties Many of the founders of the desktop computer had their minds altered by the use of psychedelic drugs. Their revolt against the elitism of the mainframe paralleled the "distrust authority" attitude of the hippies and the anti-war movement. Their minds had been moved by the "language of light."
In the eighties the new ideas and values spread to Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union and even China. The deeper meanings of Peace, Love and Community spread through the universality of the music, and the ideas of the pilgrims that had experienced or been influenced by the cauldron of the Sixties. In Prague, Czechoslovakia during the peaceful revolution there, John Lennon's "Imagine" was sung by 200,000 people as they sung the Communist dictatorship down. Esalen Institute had been doing exchanges and training in the former Soviet Union since the Seventies. In Tianamen Square the Chinese students played Beatles' and Rolling Stones' music over loud speakers. Most recently the students marching in the streets of Belgrade against the Milosevic dictatorship were giving flowers to the soldiers standing in their path, as we had done at the Pentagon in 1967.

As we approach the millennium, the wave of peace, this eternal yearning of the soul, continues to sweep over the world. Age old rivalries and hatreds and injustices are dissolving. Sometimes the pain heightens before the medicine of mediation and peace can be applied. But things definitely are a-changin' between the Palestinians and Jews, the Muslims and Croats and Serbs, the many colored people of South Africa, and even the British and Irish.

As we had predicted, the Sixties generation has entered the White House but with so many forces pulling at its skirts that too much has been compromised to the attacks and resistance of the right wing and reaction has set in like a fog bank. In the rottenness and corruption of the political system and its control by corporate interests and Christian fundamentalism there seems to be a return to the 19th century. But it can only be a brief reflex reaction to the tremendous forces of change that are beginning to transform the world.

A new generation of youth are trance dancing in floating laser illuminated warehouse dances called Raves in San Francisco and Acid House and Acid Jazz in England. There is a mood of change that again threatens to overturn the reactionary and puritanical grip on American culture perpetrated by corporate power and religious fundamentalism. The gap between the rich and the poor increases and Corporate arrogance loots the middle class. But the Era of Compassion born in the Sixties, and repressed in the Eighties and crucified in the 90s may be ready to be reborn into the forefront of American culture. Open the door the future is coming through!

Diversidade artística da Alemanha em cartaz no Recife - SendMeRSS

Cidade recebe entre os dias 16 e 24 de agosto diversas atrações culturais da Alemanha voltadas para o público jovem

De 16 a 24 de agosto, o Recife recebe o projeto Kulturfest Itinerante, festival que traz a quinze cidades brasileiras uma semana de atrações culturais da Alemanha. Música eletrônica, teatro, performances, arte digital e cinema estão na lista de eventos que o Kulturefest apresenta na cidade. Iniciativa do Ministério das Relações Exteriores da Alemanha e do Goethe-Institut, o Kulturfest Itinerante já passou por Ribeirão Preto, Blumenau, Florianópolis, Salvador, Fortaleza, Sobral, São Luis e Belém. Após o Recife, o projeto segue para João Pessoa, Campina Grande, Brasília, Goiânia, Belo Horizonte e São Paulo.
O Kulturfest Itinerante tem início no sábado, 16 de agosto, com apresentação musical ao vivo do DJ de música eletrônica Justus Köhncke, intregrante do coletivo Whrilpool Production e atualmente em trabalho solo com faixas lançadas pelo selo Kompakt, um dos mais importantes do gênero na Europa. Justus já trabalhou ao lado de artistas como Hot Chip, Erasure, Ladytron, Human League e Stereo Total, inclusive fazendo remixes. No show, que acontece a partir das 21h, na Torre Malakoff (Recife Antigo), o músico alemão se apresenta ao lado de DJ Dolores, cantando e tocando teclado e guitarra.
Cinema – Dez curtas e longas metragens em 35mm estão na programação de filmes do Kulturfest. Entre os filmes selecionados está o aclamado "Hotel Very Welcome" (2007), de Sonja Heiss, premiado no Festival de Cinema de Berlin, que retrata com humor e ironia o mundo dos viajantes "Lonely-Planet" pela Ásia. Também na programação de cinema está o filme "Yella" (2007), ganhador de vários prêmios no Festival de Cinema de Berlim, incluindo o Urso de Prata de melhor atriz para Nina Hoss, que interpreta o papel de uma jovem em meio ao fascinante mundo dos negócios em meio a estranhas verdades de seu passado. As exibições acontecem de 18 a 22 de agosto no Cinema da Fundação Joaquim Nabuco com cópias legendadas em português.
Teatro - Nos dias 21 e 22 de agosto, a partir das 20h, o Armazém 14, no Recife Antigo, se torna palco para o espetáculo Super Night Shot, da trupe Recrutas do Gob Squad. A apresentação, que faz parte do Kulturfest Itinerante, transforma o local em um set de filmagem para uma série de missões fantásticas com objetos do próprio lugar sendo utilizados para a filmagem, incluindo até mesmo a participação de figurantes do bairro, em uma espécie de "filme interativo em tempo real". Através de quatro tomadas únicas com quatro câmeras, o grupo busca viver os sonhos de pessoas anônimas que povoam a cidade, transportando-as para o mundo do cinema em cenas de mistério e ação.
Completando a programação do festival, o grupo multimídia alemão Slope apresenta a performance Voidensities. Trabalhando com som e imagens, o grupo estabelece um diálogo com a realidade local através de instalações multimídia e apropriações de espaços urbanos e transforma suas experiências em registros artísticos. O resultado é uma performance-instalação que mescla intervenções arquitetônicas, apropriações de espaço e instalações multimídia num único trabalho. As performances acontecerão no dia 17 de agosto (domingo), na Fundação Joaquim Nabuco e no dia 23 (sábado) na Torre Malakoff e na Praça do Arsenal (Recife Antigo).
